SmartPod® Crash Cushion is Ready to Ship with recent FHWA Letter of Eligibility
FHWA Delivers Letter of Eligibility CC-177 for SmartPod® Crash Cushion

On January 12, 2024 the long awaited FHWA Letter of Eligibility CC-177 arrived for the SmartPod® Crash Cushion. The SmartPod® is the newest addition to our family of roadside barriers and crash cushions at Hill & Smith. The innovative design is engineered using concepts of the successful predecessor Smart Cushion®. It is easy to install and even easier to repair.
The SmartPod® impact attenuator is non-sacrifical, fully redirective, non-gating, bi-directional and tested to AASHTO MASH-16 for Test Level 3.
This crash cushion is used to help protect motorists from hazards in both permanent and temporary work zone locations. It can transition to wide hazards and attach to most types of median and roadside barriers.
SMART “Tapered” Design Minimizes Damage During Impact
The SmartPod® is slightly tapered from front to rear. This allows the side panel sections to nest over the next section which minimizes stress and damage. During a head-on impact, the panels are designed to move freely past each other and do not become wedged when the system is compressed.
Easy to Install / Easy to Repair
The SmartPod® is delivered fully assembled on a skid frame for quick and easy installation. The system can easily be installed on a variety of concrete and asphalt foundations. System repair after impact can be achieved by simply pulling the front of the system to full length and inserting new Pods.
While not required, the FHWA Letter of Eligibility is highly sought after by manufacturer’s as it is often required by State DOT’s to be used in the Approval Process for products to be included in State DOT Approved Product and Qualified Products Lists. Our team is now working with each state to ensure SmartPod® will be approved and available for your next project.
