Zoneguard® Provides a Fast, Durable Barrier Solution for Deteriorating Battle Creek Bridge Rails

Severe alkali-silica reaction (ASR), often called “concrete cancer,” had significantly deteriorated the concrete parapets on the M-66 bridge over Interstate 94 in Battle Creek, Michigan. With the damaged bridge rails presenting crashworthiness concerns, a temporary barrier was needed to protect motorists until permanent repairs could be completed.
Although temporary concrete barrier was initially considered, the project team selected Zoneguard® after evaluating its weight, portability, durability, and installation advantages. Hill & Smith partnered with Give ‘Em A Brake Safety to provide a barrier and attenuator package. During installation, the team highlighted Zoneguard’s trucking efficiencies, quick deployment, and ability to be anchored for limited deflection. The MASH-tested steel barrier remained in place through the winter, providing temporary protection for travelers while the deteriorated bridge rails awaited repair.
